Magellan

Magellan, an 11-year-old Domestic Shorthair cat, was brought to Veterinary Eye Center - Connecticut after developing dangerously elevated eye pressure, inflammation, and significant discomfort. Dr. Minella initially began treatment with medicated eye drops to help manage Magellan’s inflammation and glaucoma and keep him as comfortable as possible. Although every effort was made to try to save his eye, it became clear that surgery was the best and safest next step for his long-term health.
Magellan underwent enucleation surgery to remove the affected eye and eliminate the source of his pain and disease. By submitting the eye for biopsy, it was determined that the source of his inflammation was a cancer called iridociliary carcinoma. The procedure was successful, and the surgery resulted in complete removal of the tumor.
Thanks to Dr. Minella’s expertise and the attentive support of her team, Magellan recovered smoothly and is now back at home with his family, comfortable and thriving. As Dr. Minella shared, “Magellan’s surgery went well and resulted in complete removal of his tumor. He is now living his best life at home with his family, comfortable and thriving.”
Magellan’s family was deeply grateful for the care they received throughout the process. His owner shared that from the very first call, the team was welcoming, compassionate, and responsive, helping them feel supported during an incredibly stressful time. They described Dr. Minella as “one of the kindest, most professional, and most skilled veterinarians I have ever met,” and credited her decisiveness and expertise with helping achieve what they hope will be a curative outcome.
Magellan’s story is a reminder of how specialized ophthalmic care can do more than protect vision. It can also uncover serious disease, relieve pain, and make a lifesaving difference.
