Lucinda

EYELID AGENESIS
Treated by
Dr. Rhiannon Austin

Lucinda, a domestic longhair cat of about 1 year old, was diagnosed with eyelid agenesis, a birth defect in which part of the upper eyelid does not form properly. Because the eyelid was incomplete, the hairs around her eye were rubbing directly against the surface of her cornea, causing chronic irritation, discomfort, and scarring.

Without treatment, this type of condition can continue to cause pain and damage to the cornea over time. To help protect Lucinda’s eyes and improve her comfort, Dr. Rhiannon Austin recommended surgical correction.

Lucinda underwent bilateral free oral mucosal graft procedures, in which tissue from inside the mouth was carefully sutured into the areas of abnormal eyelid tissue. This technique helped create a protective barrier between the surrounding hairs and the cornea, reducing friction and preventing ongoing irritation.

Thanks to Dr. Austin’s care and this advanced reconstructive procedure, Lucinda was able to get the relief she needed from the chronic discomfort caused by her condition. Her story highlights how specialized ophthalmic surgery can improve comfort, protect vision, and make a meaningful difference in a young pet’s quality of life.
